Home Insurance Isn't Just for Home Owners | Renters Need Coverage Too!

Some apartment dwellers or those who rent a condo or mobile home sometimes forget how important it is to have insurance for their property, as well as liability coverage inside their residences.

You do not have to own a home to enjoy the benefits and peace of mind that come along with a home owner's insurance policy. Even cheap home insurance can take care of many unexpected costs and ultimately save you hundreds of dollars (or more!) in the long run. While the apartment building's owners will cover damages to the structure itself, their policies are unlikely to cover any damage to your belongings in the event of fire, flood, theft or other hazards. Of course, their policies will not typically take care of liability inside your unit either.

Purchasing your own insurance policy for your rental unit, whether it's an apartment or condominium unit, or a manufactured home or rental house, is a great way to make sure you can replace your personal property should the need arise. You never know when unpredictable and dangerous weather (storms and flooding, for example), fire or theft could damage all the things that you have invested in and value.

Keep in mind, too, that accidents can take place at any time. Having liability coverage inside your rental home can also make sure you aren't liable for anyone else's medical costs should anyone slip and fall or otherwise injure themselves inside your home. Naturally, your friends or family would never hold you responsible for mishaps such as these; however, repair persons or visitors that you don't know well may be unduly litigious and look for opportunities to gain financially from even seemingly minor incidents. Not only will home insurance policies protect you financially, but they have the legal resources to make sure such unethical charlatans don't victimize you!
